New business models in the news industry in the United States

The news industry has undergone a dramatic transformation since the rise of the Internet in the 1990s.

This report was commissioned by the Media Industry Research Foundation of Finland, with the aim of identifying and describing new business models in the U.S. news industry in the late 2010s. The study takes a bottom-up approach, identifying patterns in observations obtained from industry insiders and experts as well as media scanning. Business models have been discovered through clustering of observations obtained from experts and through media mining, and expert interviews have been carried out in order to get an in-depth understanding of each model. Thirty-one experts were interviewed for the study that was presented during several seminars in Helsinki.
