The following four changes have been underway for a while and more are expected:
- Swedes' views on, and need for, volunteering have changed. Among the drivers are individualistic values and more commercial options, trends that can be expected to intensify as association-active forties and fifties check out.
- Skepticism among political representatives about the benefits and effectiveness of civil society has increased. At the same time, non-profit welfare production is described as a necessary part of the solution for a stressed public sector.
- Technological developments have fundamentally changed the landscape of attention and engagement. Social media, in particular, have changed the way people meet and provided alternatives to traditional organizational structures and physical communities.
- Immigration has led to an increasing number of Swedes with little or no experience of non-profit organization, at least in a secular and democratic context.
So what will it take for a thriving civil society in 2035?
We want to explore this together with associations, foundations, trade unions and others with a strategic interest in the future of civil society.
